Dear Aquatic Staff,
Welcome to our new CUPE 4400 Pool website.
We are constantly updating the site with information and important dates.
Please check it often.
It's hard to believe it is June already. We are making plans for the summer, EI, saying goodbye to our graduating class, and going to year end parties and concerts. This is exactly what Trustee Campbell, Trustee Crawford, Trustee Gershon, Trustee Goodman, Trustee Harrison, Trustee Hastings, Trustee Matlow, Trustee Pasternak, Trustee Rutka, and Trustee Ward ( The No's) (see recorded vote from June 27, 2007 Board minutes) want us to focus on. It will make their job so much easier. Their decision to lay off staff on June 24 will become a faceless, nameless decision based solely on numbers. A well rounded education is more than a numbers game. Before June 24, Trustee Atkinson, Trustee Bello, Trustee Bolton, Trustee Cary-Meagher, Trustee Chen, Trustee Coteau, Trustee Dandy, Trustee Davis, Trustee Payne, Trustee Rodrigues, Trustee Tonks, and Trustee Wong (The Yes') (see recorded vote from June 27, 2007 Board minutes) need your help to prevent these layoffs and closures. Since The No's are making this into a numbers game, The Yes' need numbers of their own. They need us to call and email The No's and register our disapproval of these layoffs. The No's need to realize that the numbers reflect people, students and learning, not just dollars.
On June 24, we need to be at the Board office at 5:00 p.m. for the rally. We need to encourage our students and their families to come and add their voices to our protest. There will be hotdogs, drinks, popcorn, and the media there. We are looking for some guest speakers. Ideally we are looking for a well known athlete to come and speak on the importance of keeping all of our pools open. If you know of someone who would be interested in doing this, please call or email me.
On another matter important to all of us - Employee Services will not be dealing with the surplussed aquatic staff until the middle of July. They have decided that it makes no sense to start the process with our job classification until the trustees have made their final decision on staffing levels at the June 24th meeting. Consequently, we will not be hearing about our new placements until after the school year is finished.
Due to the length of the 2009 - 2010 school year, elementary staff are required to be at work on September 2 &3, 2009. The union has voiced their objection to this as it causes problems with our members EI. The Union is getting a legal opinion on this. Principals have been informing our members that they will be required to attend Professional Development meetings at specific locations and attendance will be taken.
If you have any questions about this, please click on the Contact Us button and send your question. On this page you will find an address for any surplus staffing questions as well as an address for any other questions you have. We are also looking for any feedback on what you like about the new website and what you would like to see there.
I know it is tiring, but we need to keep fighting for what we know is important. We have to remember that as a direct result of our Save Our Pools campaign, the pools are still open! If the Board had gotten their way, 23 pools would have been drained by July 1, 2008, the remaining 16 by July 1, 2009 and 52 aquatic staff would be laid off. We have won some battles and with continued effort, we may very well win the war!
June 24 is an opportunity for us to win another battle. Be part of this exciting experience. Bring your family, have some dinner and experience the process first hand inside to board room.
I look forward to seeing all of you at
5050 Yonge Street, Wednesday, June 24 at 5:00 p.m.
In Solidarity,
Nancy Campbell
